Teratozoospermia: can it be reversed or cured?
Teratozoospermia is an abnormality in the morphology of sperm.
Does sperm shape affect fertility?
The typical form of sperm makes him able to swim through the female genital tract to reach the ovum and fertilize it. Tail defects in sperm can hinder sperm motility. The sperm head is responsible for penetrating the ovum during fertilization and any abnormality of the acrosome or head leads to the failed penetration of the ovum by the sperm. For the reasons mentioned above, teratozoospermia or abnormal sperm morphology has some effect on male fertility.
Most of the time teratozoospermia is diagnosed while assessing a man’s infertility. Men with teratozoospermia, although not null, are less likely to naturally impregnate a woman.
But it is important to keep in mind that sperm morphology is only one of many factors related to semen quality that is known to have an effect on male fertility. The other qualities of semen that are important with respect to male fertility are:
- Semen volume
- Sperm count
- Sperm motility
- Semen consistency
- Semen composition
